\"\"\u201cWhat is Jineoloj\u00ee ? Why is it important? Why did you gather here, and what will you take on board?\u201d. This is what Zozan Sima, member of the Jineoloj\u00ee Committee in Rojava, asks the 31 young women gathered around her at the beginning of her lecture. Her seminar is part of a week long Jineoloj\u00ee youth camp which takes place in Jinwar, Rojava\u2019s women village.
\nThen she goes on to explain the construction of the word \u201cJineoloj\u00ee\u201d, which comes from \u201cjin\u201d – women in Kurmanc\u00ee, and \u201cloji\u201d – which means science in Greek. It is the science of women, also \u201cIlm Al-Marra\u201d in Arabic, as explained by one of the Arab comrades. A discussion about the utility of science and the conclusion that cooking is also a science, widely spread among women, follows. We also agree that life is the source of science and that we should re connect to it.<\/p>\n

\"\"The tent where the seminars take place was built in the middle of the garden, between apricot trees, the walls are decorated with pictures, Kurdish traditional clothes, hand maid creations and banners with quotations such as :\u201cP\u00ea\u015fxistina jin\u00ea tolgirtina ji kolet\u00eeye ye\u201d – \u201cThe progress of women is revenge against oppression\u201d and \u201cHeq\u00eeqet e\u015fq e, e\u015fq j\u00ee jiyana azad e\u201d – \u201cTruth is love and love is a free life\u201d. It has been the place of daily gatherings, learning, sharing experiences and different perspectives. Seminars are held on different topics: Women\u2019s history in the world, Introduction to Jineoloj\u00ee, Ethics and Aesthetics, Anatomy and knowledge about womens bodies, Jinwar\u2019s approach on life and the pillars of Hevjiyana Azad, or how to construct free and egalitarian relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do we defend our-selves? We don\u2019t know how to! How do we organize our life? We also don\u2019t know! If one of our friends falls sick, how do we help her? We just don\u2019t know! But before, people knew all of this, science and life worked together\u201d. It is in this light that the camp\u2019s seminars are carried out, throwing aside a mere theoretical approach and focusing on women’s realities and everyday life. The anatomy seminar, for example, highlights issues such as puberty and menstruation. We also discuss the clich\u00e9s associated with virginity, such as the \u201cfirst night\u2019s blood\u201d, for whom countless women have been killed throughout history. Hanna, 20 years old says : \u201cSociety associates women with dirtiness, in a moral way, but this is totally wrong!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"For both physical and psychological self-defense, every morning at 5,30 after \u2018Rojba\u015f\u2019 or \u2018good morning\u2019 , we practice sports and Taekwondo, as one 16 year old turned out to be a black belt and is able to teach. One of us, internationalists, teach some basics of Wing Chun, one of the few martial art known to be invented by a woman. Other activities include working in the garden, making mud bricks for the houses of Jinwar, learning to drive a motorcycle, riding horses, painting, singing, playing music, volleyball and collective games. As Dersim, one 20 year old Kurdish teacher claims during one seminar: \u201cThe reality of our societies is that everything is in the hands of men, so how will society stand up for itself? If women were to empower, educate and develop themselves, it would be different!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"To link knowledge and reality, an afternoon trip to the archaeological excavations on Til Bender hill close to Heseke shows us the heritage left by the first civilizations as part of women\u2019s history. Traces of the natural and matriarchal societies can be observed and felt all around the ancient hills of Rojava. On the last day we organize a Moral, a celebration for which almost everybody had prepared something \u2013 many songs, a theater piece, a humorous sketch imitating fellow companions and a compilation of videos and pictures reflecting the time spent in the camp.
\nThe goodbye the next morning is really emotional, city by city we all leave, some crying but still full of hope and promises to meet again.<\/p>\n

Even if the time frame of the camp and of each seminar and activities was quite short, the point was to destroy the borders which i\"\"mprison our minds and bodies, as it happened for example during the driving lessons in a country where traditionally women were not encourage to drive. The camp also provided us with tools to develop an awareness of women\u2019s oppression, which can be used by each of us in our personal and collective life. Ideas of joining or creating own Jineoloj\u00ee committees, bringing its perspectives into youth youth centers, joining car lessons and continuing with Taekwondo were thrown around.
\nAt the end something changed, doors inside our minds opened and some fears vanished. Women left the camp with more light, got to know each other and deepened their understanding, with new impulses and perspectives on the path of \u201cJin, Jiyan, Azad\u00ee\u201d.<\/p>\n
