Already in the 20th century, the colonial powers of England and France had begun, with the Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916) before the end of World War I, to divide the territories of the disintegrating Ottoman Empire amongst themselves. White men began drawing new borders across the Middle East on maps. With the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) and the UN Partition Plan for Palestine (1947), the victorious powers of the world wars ultimately created a nation-state system in the Middle East that was intended to secure their power and profit interests according to the principle of “divide and rule.” This colonial order was accompanied by systematic exploitation, the stirring up of nationalism, religious fundamentalism, wars and genocides. The main victims were, and still are, the Kurdish and Palestinian peoples, who continue to fight to this day for the defense of their existence, for a life of dignity and freedom in their homelands.

Coordinates of World War III

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Western hegemonic powers under US leadership (George Bush) began drawing new maps and strategies for their unipolar “New World Order.” No corner of the earth was to be spared. The first step toward fully incorporating the resources and markets of the Middle East into the profit structure of capitalist modernity was the Gulf War of 1991. The international plot of October 9, 1998, and the subsequent abduction of Abdullah Öcalan, were intended to demonstrate: there is no alternative! With the war against Afghanistan in 2001, and the Iraq War in 2003, World War III took on further contours, which Bush Jr. presented as the “Greater Middle East Initiative.” While he claimed to be promoting “democracy and good governance, economic opportunities and, finally, knowledge within society”^1 through the bombing of cities, arbitrary torture of civilians, and the establishment of US military bases in Afghanistan and Iraq, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice confirmed in 2006 that this project was to be realized through “constructive chaos”^2. This also includes the project of political Islam in its various manifestations, from Al-Qaeda, Taliban, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and the AKP, to Daesh and HTS.

The actual goal of the USA is to destroy the social, cultural, and historical structures that have grown over millennia – the spiritual and moral values – and thus also the resilience of the peoples of the Middle East. In this sense, Western powers also intervened in the “Arab Spring” in 2011. Apart from the revolution in Rojava which pursued a Third Line strategy based on Rêber Apo’s perspectives and realized the construction of democratic, confederal self-administrative structures, most social democracy movements in North Africa and the Middle East were stifled – functionalized by external powers for the exchange of dictators or for proxy wars.

We know all too well what role the Turkish AKP government played in the war in Syria and in building supposedly “oppositional” jihadist groups. More or less in line with the hegemonic powers, it trained and equipped mobile mercenary murder gangs with NATO, UN, and EU funds, which under various names such as Al-Nusra, Daesh, SNA, or HTS, commit wars of aggression and massacres against Kurds in Rojava, against Alawites in the coastal region, or against Druze in Suweyda. Beyond Syria too, these murder gangs are deployed for illegal wars and crimes against humanity in Africa and the Middle East. Their corridors extend from Idlib to Southern Kurdistan, from Libya to Somalia.

Neo-Ottoman Empire versus Greater Israel

Erdogan demonstrated what the AKP’s vision for Syria is during his speech before the UN General Assembly on September 20, 2022, with a map in hand: the occupation of all of Northern Syria, i.e., moving toward the destruction of Democratic Autonomy in Rojava/North and East Syria, as part of the ambitions for a Neo-Ottoman Empire. It is significant that Netanyahu, exactly one year and two days later, i.e., September 22, 2023, during his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, presented his map of “Greater Israel.” According to the map, the Greater Israeli Empire, justified by Torah quotations, extends in the west from the Nile to the Euphrates in the east and from Saudi Arabia in the south to Antep and Urfa in the north. Two years ago, this presentation might have seemed unrealistic and megalomaniacal. However, if we consider some treaties concluded under the leadership of Israel and the USA since 2020, as well as some key events of the last 5 years, we understand that Israel is serious. Israel began long ago, and continues to steadily work on laying the paving stones for the path to the Greater Israeli Empire and removing any resistance to it. A milestone for this was the first Abraham Accords concluded in September 2020 with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, which hypocritically speak of “promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue to foster a culture of peace between the three Abrahamic religions and all of humanity.” The very generally worded bilateral agreements, through which Israel was able to overcome its diplomatic isolation in the Middle East, further state: “We support science, art, medicine, and commerce to inspire humanity, maximize human potential, and bring nations closer together. We seek to end radicalization and conflict to enable a better future for all children. We pursue a vision of peace, security, and prosperity in the Middle East and around the world.”^3

These are beautiful words. In reality, however, this agreement has thus far contributed more to the signatories securing mutual economic, political, and military advantages. That this is a strategic move by Israel became clear from the fact that there has been no significant resistance from the Arab states against the genocide practiced by Israel against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank since October 7, 2023. The recent illegal attacks on Iran and the annexation of Syrian territory are also tolerated. The Abraham Accords serve to shift the geo-strategic coordinates of world trade and politics in favor of Israel, the USA and the EU, and to push back the influence of China, Russia, Iran, and Turkey. Thus, Israel, Greece, and Cyprus also began in 2020 to collaborate on the approximately 1,900-kilometer EastMed Pipeline project, which represents an alternative to Turkey’s pipeline projects. Through gas exports from gas fields in Israel and Cyprus to Greece and Italy, Europe’s dependence on natural gas from Russia is to be ended. The establishment of the IMEC economic corridor from India through the Middle East to Europe, announced at the G20 summit in India in 2023, brings Israel significant political and economic power advantages, while Turkey comes away empty-handed. The David Corridor, which is to extend from Israel through Syrian territory—from the Golan Heights and Suweyda to the Euphrates—and further to Southern Kurdistan, is also linked to this new geo-strategic map of energy supply, spheres of influence and trade routes. These projects have declared both the international legal norms and UN treaties, as well as the Sykes-Picot and Lausanne agreements, null and void.

The new design that the Western hegemonic powers want to give the Middle East aims to isolate Iran and Turkey. This is also evident from the fact that Israel and the USA are currently working to conclude further “Abraham Treaties” with Azerbaijan and the Jolani government in Damascus, along with the intensification of intelligence, defense and energy relations. This is the background of the power struggle that Turkey and Israel have been waging over Syria since the fall of the Baath regime. Just like the maps of the 20th century, the maps of the competing representatives of capitalist modernity in the 21st century also represent a topography of destruction and genocide. Their trail of blood extends from the occupation attacks and drone assassinations against Kurds, through the systematic genocide in the Gaza Strip, to the genocides of Alawites in the Mediterranean coastal region and Druze in Suweyda. In this continuity stand the open threats and ongoing efforts of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to mobilize the HTS government and Arab tribes for another war of aggression against the territories of the Democratic Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria.

A Roadmap for Peace in the Middle East

It has become obvious that capitalist modernity with its three apocalyptic horsemen—nation-state, capitalism, and industrialism—is the cause of war and the destruction of life. The “new” projects and maps presented by strategists of the “new world order” under the name of “peace, democracy, and prosperity” are based on the same dehumanizing paradigm. In contrast to this topography of horror, which is heading toward an Armageddon war in the Middle East, Rêber Apo, with his historic Manifesto for Peace and a Democratic Society, has laid the foundation for a way out of chaos: the solution of Democratic Nations and Democratic Modernity in the Middle East. It is based on the communal self-administration of societies and negotiations for democratic integration. The beginning of the work of the parliamentary ‘Milli Dayanışma, Kardeşlik ve Demokrasi Komisyonu’ (National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission) in Turkey shows that parts of the Turkish state are also aware that their own existence depends on a democratic, peaceful solution to the Kurdish question. However, whether Turkey can truly seize this opportunity and become a democratic republic that opens the way to peace in the Middle East will depend on three essential factors. These are: ending aggressions against the Democratic Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria; ending the war and repressions against the Kurdish freedom movement; the release of Abdullah Öcalan and his unrestricted participation in the peace process.

The more we expand our communal organization regionally and internationally, and the faster we move Turkey through our political struggle to implement these three steps, the greater the chances that a spring of women and peoples will develop in the Middle East in the truest sense of the word, and that white colonial masters will not once again determine the fate of the Middle East.

In the current phase of World War III, a number of maps and scenarios about the future of the Middle East are circulating.
